Want to know how to get a mom cranky…and exhausted…and totally depleted? Ask her to keep giving and serving and doing more and more and more without giving her the opportunity to regroup or rest or be refreshed. Do you know what I’m talking about, mamas? As a mom of three little ones, this has definitely been something I have struggled with, but do you know whose fault it is? Mine! My hubby is awesome about encouraging me to take time to myself, but for whatever reason, I don’t always take advantage: my to-do list gets in the way…that ugly mom guilt flares up…whatever the excuse I KNOW how important it is for me to take care of myself in order for me to be ready to serve my family well.
In today’s culture, you hear a lot of talk about self-care…and frankly, much of the talk encourages a selfishness that is pulling us away from our homes and not toward our families, but that’s not what I’m talking about here! Let’s jump in to my tips, and you’ll see where I’m going with this:
5 Ways to Take Care of Mama
Give yourself breaks! Close the kitchen down for the night and head to a local restaurant (with your family, of course)…Hide in the laundry room with a piece of chocolate (just for a minute or two)…Actually use nap time to rest (I know how hard it is to make yourself do this!)…Go out for a late night store run with a friend who makes you laugh (I did this recently…it was so much fun!). Every once in awhile, it’s okay to let the dishes sit…and leave the laundry unfolded…and give yourself just a few minutes to breathe. After a short break…even if it’s for a few minutes, you will feel better! I promise!
Drink plenty of water! You know I love my coffee, but sometimes it’s not another cup of coffee I need – It’s actually a big tall glass of water that gives me that extra little boost to make it through the rest of the day. Yes, you heard me correctly! Don’t like the taste of just plain water? Find a way to give it some natural flavor – do whatever it takes to keep yourself nice and hydrated. It can make all the difference in how you feel!
Use Moisturizer! For years, my skin has gone ignored. Honestly, I’ve not taken great care of it…I’ve taken it for granted…I’ve ignored it…and one of the things I have tried to be more intentional about recently is seeking out products that will treat me well as I move closer and closer to my next milestone birthday (We won’t discuss the number!). What are my go-to products these days? I am loving the selection from CeraVe! Developed by dermatologists, these products penetrate the skin’s surface and infuse it with moisture – replenishing the vital ceramides healthy skin needs! My favorite thing? CeraVe products are free of any fragrance and they in no way irritate my skin – which is slightly sensitive to some products! (Most CeraVe products are non-comedogenic.)
Want to see my new skin-care routine?
Step #1: I gathered my new skin-care items together – corralling them in this cute little galvanized tray that I recently found! This allows me to have all of my products in one place – ready to go!
Step #2: Moms of little ones don’t have a lot of extra time! Things need to move quickly for us busy mamas, so I simply start with the Foaming Facial Cleanser! It removes dirt, oil, and makeup all while replenishing my skin.
Step #3: After I’m finished with the cleanser, I follow up with the Moisturizing Cream! Not only does it do a fantastic job of moisturizing my skin (I use it on my face AND my neck!), but it also helps to repair, restore, and maintain the skin’s natural protective barrier – working long after it is initially applied! P.S. I am in love with the pump on this container – super convenient!
I repeat this SAME simple routine morning and night! It’s completely doable for me!

I am especially excited about toting these gems along with me this summer! When heading to the pool, I love a lightweight sunscreen, and CeraVe’s is a broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50) without going on all thick and goopy! (Goopy is a word, right?) For a little sun protection on days we don’t venture to the neighborhood pool, I’m excited to use this AM Moisturizing Lotion that also provides great sun protection.
Over the years, I have done such a poor job of remembering to wear sunscreen, but I am committed to doing better from here on out! I have been so careful to protect my kiddos’ skin from sun damage and now it’s time for this busy mama of three to do the same for herself! Speaking of things I’m committed to doing better with, let’s move on…
Get movin’! I hear ya! After a busy day with little ones, sometimes the very last thing I want to do is move MORE, but I have to say that when we throw an evening walk in to our plans…or when I head to the gym after the kiddos go to bed…or when I have an impromptu dance party in the living room with the crew, I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER – SO much better! Hey, I know the experts say you aren’t supposed to exercise in the evening, but listen, a mama’s got to do what a mama’s got to do!
Learn to laugh at the crazy! There are some things in a mama’s day that can literally drive her crazy…if we let them! Have you ever had a situation with your kids where they were expecting your reaction to them to be ugly…but then you start laughing…and then they start laughing…and then everyone feels better about whatever the heck it was that had you starting to feel like you were going to lose your cool. I love when that happens, and if I’m honest, it needs to happen around here more. I need to quit taking life so stinkin’ serious and start laughing more…Yes, we laugh a lot around here, but I’ve decided one can never laugh too much…well, unless they’ve given birth to three hefty babies and then…well, never mind.
Take care of yourself, mamas! Everyone will benefit from it!
