It has started to bug me…
On my nightstand is a stack of books – eight books to be exact.
I would love to read these books. In fact, I ordered them from Amazon as soon as they were released, because I love the authors and I had a suspicion they would be books I would want to hold on to for awhile after I read them. Sometimes borrowing from the library just doesn’t cut it for me. There are actually a couple of titles I’m guessing I will never want to part with – just a guess based on what other people are saying about these great reads.
Anyway, each time one of my new books has arrived, I’ve added it to the stack, and guess what? Not one of those books has so much as even been cracked open.
It’s weird. I have always loved to read – always – and while certain seasons of life have allowed for more reading time than others, I feel sad that it’s been so long since I read a book that I wanted to read just for me.
So, here goes.
Friends, for the next eight weeks, I’m going to be Choosing Books Over Buttons. You see, I know exactly why I haven’t read much over the past several months. It’s because when I get a few minutes to myself, I scroll on my phone. When I want to wind down at night, I scroll on my phone. Life is busy, and sometimes, this mama is just tired. Can anyone relate? ha!
Now if you’re looking for someone who will make technology out to be the enemy, I’m not your gal. I love all the ways my phone keeps me connected and helps me throughout the day…yes, helps me! ha! But I also think there are times when I could set it aside and pick up one of these great books I’ve been wanting to read for so long.
Any chance you’ve been feeling the same thing? Maybe your buttons of choice aren’t on your phone (like me!), but your favorite buttons are on your laptop…or your television remote.
Want to join me?
I’m going to start tomorrow – Friday, May 5th and see if by the end of June if I can’t make at least a dent in this stack of books I’ve been wanting to read…and maybe I’ll get my kids involved, too! Maybe I’ll encourage them to put down the tablets and the remote control and join in the fun. I monitor their screen time pretty closely, so it’s not like their book time has been replaced by these things, but I’m thinking if I include them in the challenge, they will help keep me accountable. I can hear them now, “Mommy, have you read your book today?” haha!
If you’re up the challenge:
(1) Grab the image!
(2) Share the challenge on social media with #booksoverbuttons
(3) Let’s spend the next eight weeks encouraging each other to tackle the books on the nightstand!
Quick Note: You like to read books on your device? No worries! That works, too! I think my goal here is to simply get lost in a few good reads rather than vegging out so much on social media, and I would love to have a few friends join me!
