While strolling through Target one evening (You know the drill…the kids were in bed and I was in there with a coffee in one hand and my Cartwheel App in the other!), I spotted this Scotch Expressions Masking Tape that is designed to look like a foot-long ruler – It was on one of the end caps where they throw all of the clearance merchandise, and the moment I saw it, my teacher heart started beating wildly! I knew it was going to be the perfect thing to use at home for hands-on math exploration with my kiddos!
Hands-On Math Activity
The next day, we started measuring things! A few of our school books…
some of our other school supplies…
some of our toys…
(like these rectangular-shaped bristle blocks!)
…and of course a really long stuffed snake!
(This thing is a bit creepy, but my boys love it! Plus, it gave me a chance to talk about three feet equaling one yard…which made the whole creepy snake part of things totally worth it!)
As we measured, we stuck this tape all over the floor – and because it is surface-safe (being very similar to masking tape), I had no problems removing it from my hardwoods!
Have you seen this stuff? It gave my boys awesome hands-on practice with measuring things, and I’m excited to have lots more tape left on the roll to use for follow-up lessons!
Not sure if your Target carries this? You can also purchase it here!
