Summer has officially begun, and our favorite way to spend our evenings together is outside on the patio! We love to grill out, let the kids play, and enjoy a break from the heat as the sun starts to set a bit. With three kids (the oldest one being 4 years old), this whole scenario can get a little crazy, but there are some things I like to do to keep the chaos to a minimum. Want to hear how I pull this off without pulling all of my hair out of my head?
Summer Nights on the Patio
Step One: During nap time, I sneak out to the patio (with the baby monitor, of course!) 😉 and I fill up the water table and the baby pool. This gives the water a few hours to warm in the sun – which makes it the perfect temperature by the time daddy gets home! I also use this time to grab a couple of beach towels to throw out on the patio chairs – I know we’re definitely going to need those!
Step Two: After that, I head inside throw together some type of appetizer. This time of year usually calls for lots and lots of guacamole, and I like to mix some up and then toss it in the fridge to chill for a bit before the evening!

Step Three: When the kids wake up from their nap, I go ahead and apply their sunscreen and get them dressed in their swim clothes! This includes well-fitting (yes still comfy, comfy!) swimpants for the littlest ones to wear under their swimsuits, and Huggies Little Swimmers are our fav! My kids love the super-cute designs, and I love that they are made of super absorbent material. I never have any issue with them swelling in the water, and they have extra-protective leak guards, so I never have to worry about any leaks or messes.
Step Three: After everyone is dressed, I get them settled in front of some type of activity or cartoon (Yes, I said it!) so they can chill for a bit before daddy walks in the door! I use this time to go ahead and prep the rest of our meal – which usually includes some meat and veggies for the grill and some fruit for dessert!
Step Four: When daddy gets home, he rolls up his sleeves (literally) and heads straight for the grill!
Step Five: While he mans the grill, I man the kids!
They love the water table…
…as well as our little baby pool that is entirely too small for two of our three, but they love playing in it anyways.
It all makes for the perfect summer night!
When the grillin’ is complete, we grab the guacamole out of the fridge and dive in to our feast!
I may or may not have already had a few bites of guacamole before dinner. 😉
With a little bit of planning ahead, our summer nights on the patio usually go off without a hitch, and when my kids are older, I know this will be one of my favorite memories of things I loved doing with them when they were little.
